Why volunteer?

Volunteering gives individuals a chance to lend their time and effort to give back to their community or help others in need. Additionally, volunteering can provide education and experience in a variety of different areas in order to develop important skills and gain valuable knowledge. My volunteer experiences have given me the opportunity to interact with new populations to learn and improve my interpersonal skills.

My Experiences

  • Gliding Stars: a program that encourages individuals with disabilities to participate in ice skating

    • My time at gliding stars gave me the opportunity to interact with many different populations and use encouragement and problem-solving to help these individuals with social interaction while allowing them to participate in physical activity. â€‹

  • Toledo Sensory Room: a community program that provides opportunities for children with sensory processing deficits to play with different types of equipment and meet their individual sensory needs

    • At the sensory room, I am able interact with children with autism and their families and observe their interactions with different sensory equipment, which has given me more information about the benefits and purposes of sensory playgrounds.

  • Special Olympics: the world's largest sports organization for individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities that provides training and activities to over 5,000 participants year-round

    • This was a rewarding experience in which I was able to use my time to help a meaningful event run for individuals with disabilities. While serving them dinner, I was able to interact in small conversations that showed me how beneficial this event can be.
